University of Toronto Fisheries Research – AOO Community Involvement Opportunity

A researcher with the University of Toronto is seeking volunteer support for a project on Smoke and Canoe Lakes in Algonquin Park (see below map). The project aims to gather information on lake trout winter foraging activity and builds on a larger ongoing fish tracking study in the Smoke, Canoe and Tea Lake system.

The researcher plans to catch and sample 10-20 lake trout in each lake and is looking for volunteer anglers to assist with this work. The proposed sampling methods are non-lethal (i.e., length/weight measurements, a stomach content sample using a stomach flushing unit, and a small tissue sample); however, if fish are harvested, internal organ samples would also be taken.

The fieldwork is currently scheduled to take place from March 16th to 21st (weekend included). Please provide the names and contact information of any interested members to me by Friday March 3, 2023. I will then pass the information on to the researcher who will contact participants directly with further details.
